Practical guide

How to read a birth chart step by step

A chart contains a lot of information, but it does not need to be read all at once. Begin with the broad structure, then add detail only where it changes the story.

1. Begin with the Big Three

Read the Sun as developing identity, the Moon as emotional patterning, and the Ascendant as approach and first orientation. Notice agreements and contrasts.

2. Add personal planets and houses

Mercury, Venus, and Mars make the chart more specific. Add each planet’s sign, then its house: function, style, and life area.

3. Follow the closest major aspects

Prioritize aspects with small orbs, especially those involving the Sun, Moon, chart ruler, or angles. Synthesize slowly rather than turning every placement into a separate label.
